Extended Interview to Air on 'Underground After Dark' on SIRIUS Labor Day Weekend
On Little Steven's Underground Garage this weekend, August 19-20th Little Steven Van Zandt is joined by Jim McCarty. "Who is that you say? Just one of the coolest dudes in the world and a founding member, and the drummer for the Yardbirds. That's right the third or fourth most important band like ever. They are the guys that gave us Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page and they are back together and touring.", Van Zandt says.
On September 1st 10pm ET, an extended version of Little Steven's interview with McCarty will air on the third installment of 'Underground After Dark' on the 24/7 Underground Garage channel on Sirius Satellite Radio, channel 25.
The two dish about the history of the band:
*How the band got started- "It wasn't really a conscience decision.... it was 'Jimmy Reed Live at Carnegie Hall'... I thought 'this is wonderful, this is like the old rock star stuff we used to do,' but it had something extra to it, and from there we sort of formed a band."
*How Eric Clapton got involved- "Well Eric was at art school with Chris [Dreja] and Keith [Relf] he was up at Kingston Art School in Surrey near where we lived. And the art stream was really an excuse to do nothing."
*Their first record- It was live because "we just sounded crap when we went in the studio." Their unique "rave up" sound- "the Stones were doing various covers [...] and then we decided consciously, well we won't do the same covers.... I think we wanted to make it a bit exciting and also have fun and Paul developed that build up, that crescendo and then I joined him [...] it started with the bass really."
*Reasons Eric Clapton quit the band: "There was this sort of snobbery thing going on because Paul Samwell-Smith had his name - or, his parents hyphenated their name to make them sound like upper-class people [...]. And Eric was very much this sort of lower class when he started, and he was very inverted, you know, an inverted snob, so, he didn't really like all that stuff."
